How many bets are in a Yankee?

A Yankee is 11 bets on 4 selections: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold. At £1 a bet it costs £11 win only, or £22 each-way. There are no singles, so you need at least two winners for any return.

How it works

  • Every combination of your 4 selections is a separate bet: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold, 11 in total.
  • Each bet returns your unit stake multiplied by the decimal odds of every selection in it. One losing leg makes that bet lose; a void or non-runner leg counts as odds of 1.0.
  • Each-way doubles the stake to 22 bets: the place part settles every placed or winning selection at the place fraction of the odds (for example 1/4 odds a place).

Worked examples

All 4 win at 2/1, £1 stakes

Return £243.00 from a £11.00 outlay, profit £232.00.

2 of 4 win at 2/1

Return £9.00 for £11.00 staked, so a loss of £2.00.

1 of 4 wins at 5/1

No return: with one winner every Yankee bet has a losing leg, so the whole £11.00 is lost.

Frequently asked questions

A Yankee contains 11 bets on 4 selections: 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold. Each is settled separately, so you can still get a return when some selections lose.

Multiply your unit stake by 11. A £1 Yankee costs £11, a 50p one £5.50, and each-way doubles it, so £1 each-way costs £22.

It depends on the odds. With every selection at 2/1 you need 3 winners out of 4 to show a profit. Bigger prices need fewer winners; short-priced selections need more.

The non-runner is treated as void, so it counts as odds of 1.0 in every bet that includes it. A Yankee with a non-runner effectively becomes a smaller full-cover bet on the remaining selections.

A Lucky 15 is 15 bets on 4 selections (4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles and 1 fourfold). The Lucky 15 adds singles, which protect you if only one selection wins but cost more.
