How many bets are in a Patent?

A Patent is 7 bets on 3 selections: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble. At £1 a bet it costs £7 win only, or £14 each-way. Because it includes singles, a single winner always returns something.

How it works

  • Every combination of your 3 selections is a separate bet: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble, 7 in total.
  • Each bet returns your unit stake multiplied by the decimal odds of every selection in it. One losing leg makes that bet lose; a void or non-runner leg counts as odds of 1.0.
  • Each-way doubles the stake to 14 bets: the place part settles every placed or winning selection at the place fraction of the odds (for example 1/4 odds a place).

Worked examples

All 3 win at 2/1, £1 stakes

Return £63.00 from a £7.00 outlay, profit £56.00.

2 of 3 win at 2/1

Return £15.00 for £7.00 staked, so a profit of £8.00.

1 of 3 wins at 5/1

Return £6.00 from the single, a loss of £1.00.

Frequently asked questions

A Patent contains 7 bets on 3 selections: 3 singles, 3 doubles and 1 treble. Each is settled separately, so you can still get a return when some selections lose.

Multiply your unit stake by 7. A £1 Patent costs £7, a 50p one £3.50, and each-way doubles it, so £1 each-way costs £14.

It depends on the odds. With every selection at 2/1 you need 2 winners out of 3 to show a profit. Bigger prices need fewer winners; short-priced selections need more.

The non-runner is treated as void, so it counts as odds of 1.0 in every bet that includes it. A Patent with a non-runner effectively becomes a smaller full-cover bet on the remaining selections.

A Trixie is 4 bets on 3 selections (3 doubles and 1 treble). The Patent adds singles, so one winner returns something but costs more.
