How many bets are in a Lucky 31?

A Lucky 31 is 31 bets on 5 selections: 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and 1 fivefold. At £1 a bet it costs £31 win only, or £62 each-way. Because it includes singles, a single winner always returns something.

How it works

  • Every combination of your 5 selections is a separate bet: 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and 1 fivefold, 31 in total.
  • Each bet returns your unit stake multiplied by the decimal odds of every selection in it. One losing leg makes that bet lose; a void or non-runner leg counts as odds of 1.0.
  • Each-way doubles the stake to 62 bets: the place part settles every placed or winning selection at the place fraction of the odds (for example 1/4 odds a place). Bookmaker bonuses and consolation odds are not included, as terms vary.

1 of 5 wins at 5/1

Return £6.00 from the single, a loss of £25.00.

Frequently asked questions

A Lucky 31 contains 31 bets on 5 selections: 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and 1 fivefold. Each is settled separately, so you can still get a return when some selections lose.

Multiply your unit stake by 31. A £1 Lucky 31 costs £31, a 50p one £15.50, and each-way doubles it, so £1 each-way costs £62.

It depends on the odds. With every selection at 2/1 you need 3 winners out of 5 to show a profit. Bigger prices need fewer winners; short-priced selections need more.

The non-runner is treated as void, so it counts as odds of 1.0 in every bet that includes it. A Lucky 31 with a non-runner effectively becomes a smaller full-cover bet on the remaining selections.

A Canadian (Super Yankee) is 26 bets on 5 selections (10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and 1 fivefold). The Lucky 31 adds singles, so one winner returns something but costs more.
