A tipster's results page is their CV — and like any CV, it can be polished, spun, or quietly faked. Here's how to read one properly.
Start with the sample size
A +15% yield over 3,000 bets is a serious edge. The same number over 40 bets is noise. Before anything else, check how many bets the record covers. Under a few hundred, treat every headline figure with heavy scepticism.
Advised price vs the price you'll get
Most records are kept to advised prices — the odds available the moment the tip was sent. If those prices vanish in seconds (because everyone piles in) or beat what your bookmaker offers, your real results will trail the proofing. Look for records kept to industry prices like Betfair SP or Bet365 early prices.
ROI and yield, not just profit
A big profit figure can come from huge stakes, not skill. Focus on ROI / yield — profit relative to total staked. And watch the definition: "ROI on bankroll" flatters a record compared with the standard "profit to total stakes".
Look at the drawdown, not just the peak
Every profitable tipster has losing runs. A record that only shows the equity curve going up, with no mention of the worst drawdown, is hiding the part that actually determines whether you can stomach following it. A good service is upfront about its longest losing streak.
Beware the reset
If the history conveniently starts a few weeks ago, or the "all-time" figures don't add up to the monthly ones, the record may have been reset to bury a bad run. Cross-check monthly totals against the headline.
