Bankroll Management
The single most important skill in betting — protecting your money so a losing run never wipes you out.
Bankroll management is the discipline of staking a small, fixed portion of a dedicated betting pot on each bet, so no losing run can ever bust you.
How it works
Your bankroll is money set aside purely for betting, separate from everyday finances. Instead of staking random amounts, you bet a fixed percentage — usually 1–3% — on every selection. This 'flat' staking smooths out the inevitable losing runs and lets a genuine edge compound over hundreds of bets. Chasing losses by increasing stakes after a bad day is the fastest route to going broke.
Worked example
With a £1,000 bankroll and a 2% unit, you'd stake £20 per bet. Even a run of ten straight losers only costs 20% of the pot — recoverable — whereas doubling up to chase losses could clear you out in an evening.
Pros
- Survives losing runs that end undisciplined bettors
- Removes emotion from stake sizing
- Lets a real edge compound over time
Cons
- Slower growth than aggressive staking
- Requires patience and record-keeping
- Feels 'too cautious' after a hot streak
Tips
- Only ever bet what you can afford to lose entirely.
- Re-calculate your unit size monthly as the bankroll changes.
- Never increase stakes to recover a loss.
FAQ
- What percentage of my bankroll should I stake?
- Most disciplined bettors stake 1–3% per bet. Lower is safer; higher grows faster but risks bigger drawdowns.
