What is ROI in Betting? Return on Investment Explained

ROI is the single most important number for judging a tipster. Here's exactly what it means and what a realistic figure looks like.

What is ROI in Betting? Return on Investment Explained

Return on investment — ROI, often called yield in betting — is the fairest way to measure whether a tipster actually makes money. Understanding it protects you from marketing spin and cherry-picked winners.

How ROI is calculated

ROI = (total profit ÷ total amount staked) × 100. If you stake £1,000 in total and finish £80 in front, your ROI is +8%.

Because it's measured against everything you staked, ROI rewards consistent value rather than the occasional big-priced winner.

What's a realistic ROI?

Over a large sample, a sustained ROI of roughly 5–10% is genuinely strong for most sports. Elite operators in soft markets may do better, but it's rare.

Be very sceptical of anyone advertising 30%+ ROI over thousands of bets — that's almost never sustainable and usually rests on selective reporting or unrealistic odds.

Why sample size matters

A +20% ROI over 40 bets is meaningless; the same figure over 2,000 bets is exceptional. Always check how many settled bets the ROI is based on.
