In short
Betting terminology is the specialist vocabulary used across sports betting. The most important terms to know are ROI (profit as a percentage of total stakes), value bet (odds bigger than the true probability), bankroll (the money set aside for betting), stake (the amount wagered) and each-way (a win and place bet in one). Use the searchable A–Z below for any term.

- Accumulator (Acca)
- A single bet combining four or more selections where every leg must win for the bet to pay out. The odds multiply together for large potential returns, but one losing leg loses the lot. Read the full guide
- Betting Exchange
- A platform where bettors bet against each other rather than a bookmaker. You can back (bet for) or lay (bet against) an outcome, with the exchange taking commission on winnings.
- Double
- A bet on two selections where both must win. The winnings from the first roll onto the second. Read the full guide
- Dutching
- Splitting your stake across several selections in the same event so that you win the same amount whichever of them comes in. Read the full guide
- Each-way (E/W)
- Two bets in one: half the stake on a selection to win, half on it to place (finish in the top few positions per the bookmaker's terms). Read the full guide
- Evens (Even money)
- Odds of 2.0 (or 1/1) where you win the same amount as you stake. An implied probability of 50%.
- Expected Value (EV)
- The average amount a bet would win or lose if repeated many times. Positive EV (+EV) bets are the foundation of profitable betting.
- Favourite
- The selection considered most likely to win, reflected by the shortest odds in the market.
- Laying
- Betting against an outcome on an exchange — effectively acting as the bookmaker. You win if the outcome does not happen.
- Lucky 15
- Four selections in 15 bets (four singles, six doubles, four trebles and a fourfold), often with bookmaker bonuses for all-winners or a single winner. Read the full guide
- Odds-on
- Odds shorter than evens (below 2.0), meaning you risk more than you stand to win because the outcome is judged likely.
- Push (Void)
- A bet that is settled with no win or loss, with the stake returned — common on handicap and totals lines that land exactly on the number.
- Single
- A bet on one selection. It wins if that outcome is correct — the simplest and lowest-risk bet. Read the full guide
- System Bet
- A multiple bet that combines selections into several smaller wagers (like a Yankee or Trixie) so you can still profit without every pick winning.
- Value Bet
- A bet where the odds are longer than the true probability of the outcome — the core of any winning long-term strategy. Read the full guide
- Yankee
- Four selections in 11 bets (six doubles, four trebles and one fourfold) with built-in cover if not every leg wins. Read the full guide
Betting terms FAQ
- What does ROI mean in betting?
- ROI (Return on Investment) is total profit divided by total staked, shown as a percentage. It is the fairest way to compare tipsters because it accounts for how much was risked to achieve the profit.
- What is a value bet?
- A value bet is one where the odds offered are longer (bigger) than the true probability of the outcome. Consistently backing value is the only reliable route to long-term profit.
- What is the difference between backing and laying?
- Backing is betting for an outcome to happen (the standard bet). Laying, available on betting exchanges, is betting against an outcome — you win if it does not happen.
- What is the overround?
- The overround is the bookmaker's margin: when you add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes they total more than 100%. That extra is the bookmaker's built-in edge.
