ROI, Yield and Strike Rate Explained (Racing & Beyond)
Tipsters throw around 'ROI', 'yield' and 'strike rate' constantly. Here's what each actually means — and which one you should really care about.
If you're going to research tipsters properly, you need to speak the language. These three metrics get quoted everywhere, often misleadingly. Understanding them protects you from marketing spin.
Strike rate
Strike rate is simply the percentage of bets that win. It sounds important but tells you nothing about profitability by itself, because it ignores the odds you were betting at.
ROI / Yield
Return on investment (often called yield in betting) is profit divided by total staked, expressed as a percentage. A yield of +10% means for every £100 staked you're £10 in front.
A sustained yield above 5–8% over a large sample is genuinely strong. Be very wary of anyone claiming 30%+ yields over thousands of bets — that's rare enough to warrant deep scepticism.
Why staking and sample size change everything
A great yield over 50 bets is meaningless; the same yield over 2,000 bets is impressive. Also check whether results assume level stakes or a complicated staking plan that's hard to replicate.
