In short
Betting terminology is the specialist vocabulary used across sports betting. The most important terms to know are ROI (profit as a percentage of total stakes), value bet (odds bigger than the true probability), bankroll (the money set aside for betting), stake (the amount wagered) and each-way (a win and place bet in one). Use the searchable A–Z below for any term.

- Ante-post
- A bet placed well in advance of an event, often at bigger prices. In most cases your stake is lost if your selection is withdrawn before the event starts. Read the full guide
- Asian Handicap
- A handicap market that removes the draw using half and quarter-goal lines, splitting your stake to reduce risk compared with a traditional handicap. Read the full guide
- Bankroll
- The total pot of money you have set aside specifically for betting. Sensible bettors only stake a small, fixed percentage of it per bet. Read the full guide
- Draw No Bet (DNB)
- A bet on the home or away team where your stake is refunded if the match ends in a draw. Read the full guide
- Dutching
- Splitting your stake across several selections in the same event so that you win the same amount whichever of them comes in. Read the full guide
- Each-way (E/W)
- Two bets in one: half the stake on a selection to win, half on it to place (finish in the top few positions per the bookmaker's terms). Read the full guide
- Evens (Even money)
- Odds of 2.0 (or 1/1) where you win the same amount as you stake. An implied probability of 50%.
- Fractional Odds
- The traditional UK odds format (e.g. 5/1). The first number is your profit relative to the second number staked.
- Push (Void)
- A bet that is settled with no win or loss, with the stake returned — common on handicap and totals lines that land exactly on the number.
- Return on Investment (ROI)
- Total profit divided by total amount staked, expressed as a percentage. The truest measure of a tipster's or bettor's performance.
- Stake
- The amount of money placed on a bet.
- Yield
- Similar to ROI — the average profit per unit staked, used to judge a tipster's efficiency independently of stake size.
Betting terms FAQ
- What does ROI mean in betting?
- ROI (Return on Investment) is total profit divided by total staked, shown as a percentage. It is the fairest way to compare tipsters because it accounts for how much was risked to achieve the profit.
- What is a value bet?
- A value bet is one where the odds offered are longer (bigger) than the true probability of the outcome. Consistently backing value is the only reliable route to long-term profit.
- What is the difference between backing and laying?
- Backing is betting for an outcome to happen (the standard bet). Laying, available on betting exchanges, is betting against an outcome — you win if it does not happen.
- What is the overround?
- The overround is the bookmaker's margin: when you add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes they total more than 100%. That extra is the bookmaker's built-in edge.
