Over/under betting — also called 'totals' — is one of the simplest and most popular markets, especially in football. Instead of picking a winner, you bet on whether a total (goals, points, corners and so on) will be above or below a line the bookmaker sets. The basic idea
The bookmaker sets a line — say 2.5 goals in a football match — and you bet 'over' (3 or more goals) or 'under' (2 or fewer). Half-number lines like 2.5 avoid a tie, so there's always a clear winner or loser.
It's popular because you don't need to predict the result, just the character of the game.
Whole-number lines and the push
When the line is a whole number, such as 2.0 goals, an exact result of 2 is a 'push' and your stake is returned. Asian totals split lines (like 2.25) to spread risk across two half-lines — a more advanced variant.
Always check whether a line is a half or whole number so you know if a push is possible.
Finding value in totals
As with any market, the goal is value: comparing the odds' implied probability against your own estimate of how many goals or points are likely. Totals reward good judgement of tempo and defences over guessing winners.
