How it works
Terms vary by race type and field size — e.g. 1/5 the odds for the top 4 in a big handicap, or 1/4 the odds for the top 3 in a smaller race. These terms make a big difference to each-way value, and some bookmakers offer enhanced 'extra place' promotions.
Worked example
At 1/5 odds on a 10.0 selection, the place part pays at 2.80 (i.e. (10−1)÷5 + 1). Under 1/4 terms it would pay 3.25 — a meaningful difference.
